Upcoming UK certification – Are you prepared?

UKCA Logo

This blog is for you if you are shipping your product or placing manufactured goods on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland). This year there are new requirements that all manufacturers must adhere to going forward.

What do you need to do to comply with regulations on manufactured goods you place on the GB market?

If you placed goods on the UK market before 1 January 2021, you do not need to do anything for these individual goods. They can continue to circulate on either market until they reach their end-user and do not need to comply with the changes that took effect from 1 January 2021. You will hear about two types of markings around this topic:

UKCA Marking:

The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new UK product marking used for goods placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland). It covers most goods that previously required the CE marking. The technical requirements (‘essential requirements’) you must meet – and the conformity assessment processes and standards that can be used to demonstrate conformity – are essentially the same as they were for the CE marking. The circumstances in which you can use self-declaration of conformity for UKCA marking are the same for CE marking. If you were able to self-declare conformity for the CE marking, you would be able to do the same for the UKCA marking.

The UKCA marking is not recognized on the EU market. Products need a CE marking for sale in the EU.

  • Moving goods from Northern Ireland to Great Britain:

The UK government guarantees unfettered access for Northern Ireland’s businesses to the whole of the UK market, without the need for additional approvals before placing goods on the market in the rest of the UK. You can place qualifying Northern Ireland goods on the market in Great Britain based on the conformity markings you use in Northern Ireland.

  • UKNI Marking:

The UKNI marking is new conformity marking for products placed on the market in Northern Ireland which have undergone mandatory third-party conformity assessment by a body based in the UK. If you are using a UK body to carry out mandatory third-party conformity assessment, you also need to apply a UKNI marking.

When will the UKCA Marking be in effect?

The UKCA marking came into effect on 1 January 2021. However, to allow businesses time to adjust to the new requirements, you will still use the CE marking until 1 January 2022 in most cases. Note that this requirement is for UK only.

The table below illustrates the accepted markings on each relevant market.
