Silex Unwired

Wi-Fi 6E with Silex at Embedded World 2023

Silex's Wi-Fi 6E demo shares benefits and how it's accelerating the future of connectivity.

While exhibiting at Embedded World 2023, Silex's embedded systems expert Babar Hashim had the exciting opportunity to demo Silex Technology’s industry-first enterprise-grade Wi-Fi 6E module (SX-PCEAX) on Future Electronics' "Tech Ventures" with Lazina. For those who are not familiar with Wi-Fi 6E yet, Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band to the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands available in Wi-Fi 6. The additional 6GHz band helps reduce congestion in areas with multiple Wi-Fi networks, improving network performance and reliability.

The below video provides a glimpse of what a difference streaming a video can look like between a 2.4GHz band vs 6GHz.

What is Wi-Fi 6E?

Wi-Fi 6E further enhances the benefits of Wi-Fi 6, such as higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates, by extending operations into the 6 GHz domain. This is possible because at 6 GHz there is more than 1,200 MHz of unlicensed spectrum available, which is more than double what is available at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz combined. There is also more than triple the number of high-bandwidth channels available at 6 GHz and users will not run into interference issues with decades of legacy devices. Together, these capabilities mean Wi-Fi 6E can offer users a massive leap in wireless performance and efficiency (especially for high bandwidth enterprise applications) and further improve reliability for mission-critical devices, such as those used for healthcare.

Silex Wi-Fi 6E Module (SX-PCEAX) Evaluation

Next Generation IEEE 802.11 abgn/ac/ax plus Bluetooth PCIe Combo Module

The SX-PCEAX is one of the industry’s first Tri-band Wi-Fi 6E modules. This Wi-Fi 6E module extends the benefits that Wi-Fi 6 already provides in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to 6 GHz and helps increase overall capacity and performance. SX-PCEAX is a tri-band IEEE 802.11 abgn/ac/ax WLAN module plus Bluetooth 5.2 BR/EDR/LE combo module based on Qualcomm’s QCA2066 SoC.

The SX-PCEAX comes in a half mini-card PCIe card and M.2 form-factors that allow customers to easily evaluate the radio on any platform that supports either of these two popular interfaces. We support the below reference platforms and provide a Linux OS evaluation image that includes Silex’s reference radio driver, supplicant, and tools to test the following:

  • Basic Wireless Functionality
  • Advanced Wi-Fi Security
  • Data Throughput
  • Soft Access Point Mode
  • DHCP Server and Client
