Embedded World 2014: A Smarter World Enabled by Wireless Connectivity to Realize the “Internet of Things” Vision

EW NuernbergSilex Technology recently attended Embedded World, a global conference held in Nuremberg, Germany, where more than 900 exhibitors and over 22,500 attendees gather annually from all parts of the world. Unlike any other embedded design show, Embedded World attracts local Germany-based companies (i.e. German distributors), and a large U.S. contingent. As I was arriving to the show, I found myself on the same connecting flight from Frankfort to Nuremberg with business associates that I work with from Freescale Semiconductor and Mentor Graphics!

EW Nuernberg_IoTAs for the show itself, I think Sylvain Gardet from Freescale put it best in his blog:  “The show should be renamed “embedded world for the Internet of Things.” The pervasiveness of the IoT — from demo signs to hands-on sessions — was undeniable. I could not turn a corner without hearing IoT chatter or seeing IoT-this and IoT-that signs. Once seen by some as hype, the IoT has become reality as implementations are becoming more concrete. I saw countless makers and demonstrations of wearables, automotive systems, medical monitoring, and home appliances that are fueling the IoT market with new smart, connected solutions.”

EW Nuernberg_ULPANSilex Technology’s new Ultra-Low Power Wi-Fi module (SX-ULPAN) was showcased at the Freescale booth and several European distributors’ displayed our entire family of embedded wireless solutions.  Relevant to the IoT theme seen at the conference, Freescale showed a “One Box” demonstration.

One BoxThe “One Box” (in red circle) is the center of the smart home and smart energy demonstration.  It is powered by a Freescale i.MX6 and has both Wi-Fi and Zigbee connectivity.  The Wi-Fi radio is the Silex Technology module for Freescale i.MX6-based devices, SX-SDCAN.  In this demonstration, the SX-SDCAN connects to the tablet that has an application to control the various devices, as well as, devices like the smart thermostat and network camera!

Silex Technology sees great opportunity in providing ultra-low power Wi-Fi solutions. With our existing relationship with Qualcomm Atheros, Silex is able to access industry leading technology to provide solutions to enable Internet of Things connectivity.  Look for exciting new product announcements in the near future from Silex Technology.
