Making a Difference in the Lives of the Hungry at Second Harvest Food Bank

Despite its reputation for wealth and abundance, 301,000 people in Orange County are at risk of hunger.

At Silex Technology, social responsibility is ingrained in our DNA. When we heard that the Second Harvest Food Bank provides meals to more than 250,000 local children, seniors, and families each month, we were eager to get involved.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County is the largest hunger-relief nonprofit driving the effort to end hunger in the community. Founded by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Orange in 1983, the organization began its food distribution operations in a converted fruit packing facility in the City of Orange. Since opening, Second Harvest has distributed more than 379 million meals through a network of more than 300 community and program partners.

Determined to assist in carrying on the legacy of its founders, the Silex team met at the Second Harvest Food Distribution Center in Irvine, CA on a June 15. After just three hours, the group was able to bag forty-nine hundred oranges for those in need. Volunteering at Second Harvest was a fantastic experience and provided the opportunity to contribute to an important cause with strong roots grounded in the foundation of Orange County.
