Second Harvest Food Drive Fundraiser

Second Harvest

The Reality of the Hunger Crisis: "Most of the hungry are the working poor who are trying their best to provide food for their families, or seniors on fixed incomes who simply cannot make ends meet. Many more are impacted by COVID-related unemployment which forces them to make hard choices between buying food and paying the rent or buying the medicine they need.”

-Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County

Covid-19 has negatively impacted communities throughout the state, country, and world. Our own community in Orange County is no exception. With the astounding rise in unemployment, business closures, high demand for shelf-stable foods, supply chain interruptions, and higher food prices, the pandemic has resulted in a hunger crisis and newly or increasingly vulnerable individuals. As “Difference Makers,” it is always very important to Silex Technology to help those in need, but it is especially important during these trying times. Therefore, over the holiday season we partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County to help feed local families.

In the past, Silex employees volunteered at Second Harvest in person, but even with the situation at hand, we knew we wanted to get involved. We asked our employees to get into the spirit of giving as the holidays quickly approached and make contributions to our food drive fundraiser. The fundraiser, which ran throughout the month of December 2020, provided thousands of meals to local families, 282 per employee to be exact! With the generous employee contributions and a match from our Culture Club, we were proud to make a difference in our community. Our hope is that with time the circumstances will be safer, and we will again be able volunteer not only our monetary donations, but also our time to this worthy cause.

There are over 500,000 Orange County residents who are at risk of hunger, including children, seniors, differently-abled, adults and families. Second Harvest wants to take the stress of hunger out of the equation for thousands of local families during these unprecedented times, when struggling families are being faced with countless other worries. The organization provides wholesome food and fresh produce to more than 400,000 food insecure individuals countywide on a monthly basis with the help of supporters, volunteers, and hundreds of partner agencies. Second Harvest has more than doubled its food distribution from 2019 to 2020, which shows how much of an impact the unexpected circumstances of 2020 have made and highlights the need to step up and lend a helping hand.

Together, we can make sure no one goes hungry. Silex Technology invites you to learn more about Second Harvest and donating time or resources by clicking here.
